BOSSES have backed Southend’s Business Improvement District to continue for five more years, after successfully making the city a “more vibrant place” and helping to deliver a host of campaigns and activities including spectacular fireworks displays.
Southend BID is nearing the end of its second term in Southend, with a ballot set to take place among businesses in October and November to decide whether it will get another five years in the city.
The organisation - which is behind Southend’s street rangers, Christmas lights switch-on and the annual seafront firework displays - provides support for traders who in turn pay a levy into a pot which is used to organise events and push through city centre improvements.

Some traders in Southend have already pledged their support for BID ahead of the ballot.
Janneman Britz, general manager at Park Inn said: “The BID makes our city centre more vibrant.
“Their campaigns and activities bring Southend to life, link us to the community and offer opportunities to get our business out there to the public.
“It is great to have their support.”
Steve Ackroyd, director of Metro Bank, added: “The BID has delivered so much and there is more to come.
“I am delighted that the BID is coming to deliver with a focus on community and sustainability.”
Joe Barnes, store manager at Boots at the Royals, added: “The BID and the Street Rangers are an invaluable asset to our city, working in collaboration with all agencies and businesses across the city centre ensuring Southend is a safe and pleasing place for all visitors.
"I look forward to continuing building a great network of people amongst the BID to improve Southend further.”
Ahead of the vote BID has outlined its plan for the next five years, which will include supporting city-wide campaigns, setting up seasonal decorations, and supplying street rangers to patrol the streets and protect businesses.
Mark Bartrip, chair of Southend BID said: “To say that this is an exciting time for Southend would be an understatement. With city status awarded there is a huge potential for economic and cultural benefits, generating revenue and opportunities.”
