Tributes have been flooding in to a "great musician" who has dies after a suspected assault near a home in Rochford.

Bill Witham, 68, a well-known musician who played under the stage name Napper Swan and regularly performed in pubs in south Essex, died on September 25.

It came after emergency services were called to concerns for the welfare of a man on September 12 in Hullbridge, at about 5.30am.

Posting on Facebook friends and fans have paid tribute to him. One said: "Really sad to hear of the loss of Bill Witham aka Nappa Swan.

"Great musician, funny guy, absolute wind up, nightmare to play at pool, life and soul of a night out.

"Glad to have known him, he'll be missed by many. Rip Bill."

Another added: "R.I.P Bill Witham. AKA - Napper Swan. Another Comedy, musical genius gone too soon."

Police say they have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Witham’s death.

They believe he was assaulted outside a property in Windsor Road, in Rochford, at about 5.20pm on September 6.

As part of the investigation, a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He has been released on bail until October 12.

In a statement relased today, Mr Witham's family said: “After being treated in hospital since September 12 Bill Witham, aka Napper Swan, passed away peacefully on September 25.

“He was a much-loved character with a big heart and an even bigger smile.

“He will be sadly missed by all his friends and family and will forever be in our hearts.”

His funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed.

Police have have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Witham’s death and they now believe he was assaulted outside a property in Windsor Road, in Rochford, at about 5.20pm on September 6.

Police need anyone who witnessed the incident in Windsor Road, Rochford, or any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time to get in contact.
