Metal signs and other objects were thrown at moving vehicles on the A127, with one driver claiming his van was hit by a piece of metal.
Police were called to the incident on the major south Essex road on Monday after multiple reports of items such as metal road signs being thrown at the vehicles.
One motorist posted on Facebook claiming that a metal object hit his van.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "We were called to the A127 at around 8pm on Monday following multiple reports of items including metal road signs being thrown at moving cars.
"Officers attended within four minutes and arrested a man in connection.
"Harry Harrison, 18 of no fixed abode has since been charged with criminal damage to a vehicle.
