THE Plough and Sail is a staple of life in south Essex.
If you fancy an amazing Sunday lunch or a beautiful dinner, then the visit to the picturesque Paglesham pub is a must for many.
Abi Oliver is the next generation of her family keeping the pub as successful as ever.
Owned by the Oliver family since 1965, the village pub, renowned for its exceptional menu, has links to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
Located close to the River Roach, the quaint Paglesham
pub has been a fixture there for more than 300 years.Back then it quenched the thirsts of the hard-working oyster smacks crews and nowadays it caters to the people of Rochford, serving delicious food and speciality drinks.
“I have memories of moving in to the pub when I was five and allthe familiar faces there,” reminisced Abi.
“My nan and grandad, Ken and Hazel Oliver, originally took over in 1965. When they got too old to run it my dad Mark took over, and we moved in as a family in 1995. It has always been like one extended family to me.”
As manager Abi sees a lot of familiar faces coming through the door each day.
“There are people now who remember my nan and grandad when they were behind the bar.
Now I have my little boy Lennon and he absolutely loves it here as well.”
The pub serves delicious homemade food like pies, fish and chips, burgers, and there is a specials board which changes weekly.
“Our most popular dishes are the steak and kidney and steak and ale pies, and on the specials board wehave things like fishpie, curry, lamb chops, and seabass.”
The team also have also the vegan, veggie and gluten-free options.
“People love the sweet potato burger even if they’re not veggie.
We scoop the flesh of the sweet potato and mix it up with other roasted veg and make it into a patty and fry it,” said Abi.
They have a vast gin selection of more than 40 choices, plus regular guest ales including those from local breweries.
Abi is passionate about giving customers whatthey want The pub’s popular ‘pudding and pie’ menu will start again from next Thursday until May where there is a set menu of two courses for £16.95.
