TWO Canvey mums have set up a school uniform bank where struggling parents can pick up shirts, blazers and more for free without a fear of being judged.

Jan Dee, 66, and Jakki Riches, 50, are launching the uniform bank this week to help parents battling the cost-of-living crisis, with hundreds of items already donated.

The school uniform bank is based at Castle View School, but also has uniform for all Canvey schools.

It will be open every Thursday from 10am to 2pm.

Mrs Dee said: “Things are just so hard for parents now, especially with the cost-of-living crisis.

“We came up with the idea as we know buying uniform can be hard, it can be expensive, and children grow out of it so fast.

“But there is always so much uniform that gets left around, as charity shops don’t take it, and so we thought why don’t we set this up and help parents on the Island.

“It will be vital to so many who are struggling I am sure, we aren’t charging so they can take what they need, and they haven’t then got to worry, as I know it can be a worry.

“It is something Canvey needs, and I hope it will be a lifeline for many parents.”

After posting about the idea on Facebook around two months ago, she was inundated with compliments and donations.

With too many donations to store at home, Castle View School offered a private space at the side of the school that parents can visit discretely.

Mrs Dee added: “We have got so much uniform already that has all been donated by parents across Canvey.

“We have also had racks and hangers donated for free.

“We have now got loads, every size under the sun, for every school on Canvey, even including new uniform too.

“We have Christmas jumpers too, prom dresses, and even fancy dress to help families on things such as World Book Day.

“It has just taken off, it has been unbelievable, I am so excited.

“We aren’t charging a penny either, so I just hope people come in, and know it is a welcoming space, where you won’t be judged, we are here to help.”
