HUNGRY motorists may soon be able to enjoy Greggs pastries as they fill-up their vehicles at Castle Point Service Station.

Bosses at the ESSO service station in Somnes Avenue, managed by Motor Fuel Group (MFG), have submitted an application to build a Greggs food court and five electric vehicle charging points.

MFG, the UK's largest forecourt operator with over 900 locations, says the plans will create up to eight new jobs and offer drivers an “improved retail experience”.

To make way for the new facilities, the station’s existing automatic car wash and building will be demolished, if plans are approved by Castle Point Council.

“It’s always a good thing when these big businesses move into Canvey,” councillor Dave Blackwell, leader of the council, said.

“I’m sure our residents will appreciate being able to pop in and get a sausage roll on their way to work in the morning.

“It will be a small shame to lose the car wash, as it was quite handy to have one there, but as a council we are always looking to welcome new business to the area, and this would be a great boost for the patrol station.”

The Greggs booth will offer a limited range of hot and cold snacks and drinks, which includes coffee, plus a range of hot and cold pastries, planning documents reveal.

The proposed booth will be operated by five full time and three part time staff.

“Enhanced retail shop merchandising together with food and beverage facilities and having electric vehicle charging is a major trend within a modern service station which has to evolve in response to accommodate and meet the changing needs and aspirations of consumers,” planning documents supporting the application state.

“With electric motor vehicles trending towards replacing combustion engine vehicles as the main transportation solution for mass transit a significant barrier to be overcome is providing a viable charging solution. It is essential that a fully developed electric vehicle charging infrastructure is established in the UK.”

The service station opening hours will remain 24 hours every day.
