Police are urging drivers to "be patient" after a serious crash has closed the A13 in Basildon.
Police are on the scene of a crash at the Five Bells area of the A13.
Traffic was earlier held eastbound to allow an air ambulance to attend, according to Essex Travel News.
Officers are warning drivers against reversing and driving the wrong way down the major road to avoid the closure.
An Essex Police roads unit spokesman said: "We're attending a collision at the 'Five Bells' area of the A13 at Basildon - if you saw anything please let us know.
"Some cars are reversing and turning, driving the wrong way - do not do this, we will prosecute, please be patient."
Following the closure, a spokesman said: "We are currently on the scene of a serious collision on the A13.
"A road closure is in place, and we ask road users to find an alternative route."
Traffic remains slow eastbound on the A13 due to onlookers, according to Essex County Council's traffic control.
