A BENFLEET park could be renamed in honour of the late Queen, as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty.
Sue Mumford, Tory councillor for the St George’s ward at Castle Point Council, has submitted a motion to see Tarpots Recreational Ground to be renamed “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Memorial Ground”.
The motion was discussed at a council meeting last night.
It follows the tragic passing of the 96-year-old Queen in September.
Mrs Mumford said: “Obviously we had the very sad passing of the Queen and I think it would be lovely to recognise her for the dedication and all her duty.
“She had been one of the most inspiring women of my lifetime.
“I chose the recreational ground because it’s a lovely space and I and other councillors have worked hard to make it a nice place.
“I feel renaming it for the Queen will be a very fitting tribute to her in Castle Point and help to recognise her work and everything she did for our country.
“I hope to have some sort of plaque in the park to inform and show people about the new name.
“I hope to see the park renamed as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Memorial Ground.”
Mrs Mumford is confident an unveiling event could be held with councillors and residents in attendance, if the plan goes ahead.
The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral on September 8.
Her death sparked an outpouring of emotion across the country, and the world, with the country entering a two-week period of mourning, with thousands attending the funeral services.
According to the official death certificate, the Queen’s cause of death was given as “old age”.
