ESSEX’S first “community supermarket” has officially opened in Basildon, offering new hope to residents struggling through the cost-of-living crisis.

On Friday, Essex County Council officially opened the Hope Community Supermarket at the Laindon Community Centre.

The supermarket offers cheap food at a cut-price rate to those struggling to afford supplies food and pay increasing bills.

Wendy Coulson, a Laindon resident who has already benefited from the new supermarket on opening day, said: “We heard about the community supermarket and wanted to visit as it opened.

“Everybody is finding things a bit tight and with Christmas coming up, this is a fantastic opportunity to get some great products that will really help people who are struggling if they need a bit extra.

“We have bought basics as the food cupboard is running low, like rice, vegetables, and soup. It is brilliant and we will definitely come again.

Billericay Street Pastors and Hopethree16, a volunteer-led organisation, with investment from Essex County Council respectively, are running the new project.

Phil Norton, chair of Billericay Street Pastors, said: “With ever-increasing costs for every-day essentials, such as food and fuel, there is a real need to help families who may be struggling to make ends meet.

“The introduction of this new community supermarket will mean that people will be able to save some money on their weekly bills, giving them essential extra funds for things like utility bills or school uniform or anything else that their families need.”

The aim of the new community shop idea is to bridge the gap between foodbanks and supermarkets.

It means, unlike foodbanks, customers can shop freely and choose what they spend their money on, while still getting it at a very affordable price.

Councillor Louise McKinlay, deputy leader of Essex County Council, added: “We know how much pressure family budgets are going to be under this Christmas and into the new year, so this is welcome and timely support for families.

“We are already seeing customer numbers in Laindon beginning to build.

“But it’s not just about food. Hope Community Supermarket is also a vital local hub, bringing neighbours and communities together and offering a warm welcome and friendly face to anyone needing support during these challenging times.”
