CHILDREN were spotted playing on a frozen lake in Shoebury just days after three children lost their life in a heartbreaking tragedy.

A concerned member of the public watched on in horror as the group of ten children in school uniform started playing on the ice on the duck pond in Shoebury Park.

The scary incident came just days after four boys died after failing through ice into a lake in Solihill.

A woman, 31, has urged parents to speak to their children following the incident.

She told the Echo: “There was roughly ten children, a mixture of boys and girls.

“Some were on the ice itself, throwing large bits of ice across the pond, while others were stood on the wooden platform cheering them on.

“I did try to tell them it wasn’t a good idea to be on the ice, but they didn’t want to listen, and I was hesitant to approach them.

“I am so concerned because all I could think about was how much danger they were putting themselves in, especially after what happened at the weekend.

“It is something that needs to be discussed in schools, or posters put up at parks and lakes by the Council to warn people of the dangers of ice.

“It was so concerning.”

Martin Terry, councillor responsible for public protection, urged parents, and schools to remind children about the dangers.

He said: “The council has a responsibility of public protection across the borough but there also needs to be a sense of common sense for everybody here.

“I urge all parents, institutions, schools, and even the police, to give out a strong message that playing on ice is dangerous, and it should be discouraged.

“I always knew it was dangerous as my parents instilled it in me, so it is a big responsibility on all of us to get that message out.

“It is such a dangerous thing as we were reminded of over the weekend.

“These children may have never seen such ice before so now is the time to remind them how dangerous it is.”

The woman claims the children were in school uniform, for Shoebury High School.

The school was contacted by the Echo for a response on this but failed to respond.
