STUDENTS have been told they are no longer “allowed to touch each other” at Southend school, after a change to procedures.

Southchurch High School, in Southchurch Boulevard, sent a letter home to parents on January 9, informing them of changes to the school procedures.

The letter stated: “Students are not allowed to touch each other whilst on site.

“The only exceptions will be in Performing Arts, sporting activities and PE lessons, when this is required.

“This will help create a calm and orderly atmosphere and ensure that there is no confusion about play fighting or anything more serious.”

Echo Facebook users also gave their views on social media at the decision to ban contact.

Many raised concerns about the emotional and mental wellbeing of children if they are no longer “allowed to hug”.

Linda Baxter wrote: “So if a friend is ‘upset’ in school, a friend cannot comfort them to offer support with a hug?

“People wonder why there are so many people with mental health problems, with the impact of covid, and rules like this.

“Human contact is natural, and a given, shocking.”

Lesley Butcher added: “School is not just about intellectual education. It is about social and emotional as well.”

Tania Lee said: “So sad, as all this will teach children is not to be compassionate of peers.

“Physical contact is a basic human need, and some children only receive that closeness from peers and staff at school, so to take that away is disgusting.”
