THE FORMER Basildon bus station Wimpy is set to reopen as a new café in March.

Station Café will open in the South Walk, Basildon, unit almost 16 months after the Wimpy closed following the death of franchise owner Theo Aristodimou.

Work is underway on the site to renovate the unit ahead of its big reopening next month.

Residents are looking forward to the site coming back into use.

“It's been empty for over a year, so it's good to have it opening again,” said Basildon resident Roy Davis, 76.

“It is very handy if you for getting a bite to eat have time before getting a bus or train.

“And of course, more jobs are always good along with having somewhere to get a nice breakfast this side of town.”

The former Wimpy opened in 2014 and had become a favourite with residents.

Nethermayne resident Paul Hearnden, 61, said: “Everyone misses the Wimpy, it was really one of the best places to eat in the town.

“It has been a while since it closed now, so it’s good to see that someone new is moving in and taking over an empty shop.

“The more places to eat the better I say!”

He added: “I often walk past that building and think it’s a shame it’s empty, but it won’t be for long now!”

Independent Basildon councillor Walter Brown said: “I used to eat at Wimpy very regularly and it was such a massive shame when it closed down in tragic circumstances.

“But I can only welcome the renewal of vacant spaces coming back to life with a new businesses and a new place to eat.

“The town centre has experienced years of decline, with so many vacant shops, so I am very happy to see that there is a new owner moving into that shop.”

He added: “Investment in the town centre, bringing it back up to speed, is always welcome in my eyes.”

The death of franchisee Theo Aristodimou was confirmed by Chris Woolfenden, general manager Wimpy UK, in November 2021.

Moolfenden described Mr Aristodimou, known as “Frank” by many, as a “friend and colleague”.
