A SENIOR councillor has hit back at what he says is a “vexatious” complaint against him after representing a church in a dispute with a developer.
Conservative David Dadds, a former mayor of Basildon, has strenuously denied any wrongdoing after being the subject of a complaint from Jarvis Developments.
Mr Dadds was contacted by the United Reformed Church, in Chapel Street, over an ongoing dispute with the firm about a boundary fence and the cutting of hedgerows and trees.
The Billericay East councillor of more than two decades wrote to the company on behalf of the church, requesting works were halted to allow for mediation.
Following a site visit by Mr Dadds the developer has submitted an official complaint to the council.
“The complaint is vexatious and without merit. I raised on behalf of the residents and local church genuine concerns about development,” said Mr Dadds.
“I asked the complainant if the works could be paused pending possible mediation between the parties; this was declined by the complainant.
“I took the step, after speaking to the church, to formally help them as a solicitor too and I have assisted them on a probono basis. I have always conducted myself in a professional way.”
Reginald O’Neill, who owns a dental care business neighbouring the church, says he has accompanied Mr Dadds whenever he has visited the site.
He told the Echo: “I am alarmed at these allegations as I can only state from my experience being present on site that Mr Dadds was extremely courteous and non-challenging in his manner throughout such site meetings.”
The issue has been reported to Basildon Council’s standards committee, of which Mr Dadds is the chairman, with councillors voting to open an investigation to determine if there has been any wrongdoing.
A spokesman for the United Reformed Church said: “The church has appreciated the support of Mr Dadds who has acted for us initially as a local councillor and then as legal representative.
“Throughout our meetings with him, he has acted with complete professionalism.”
Jarvis Developments has been contacted for comment.
