Southend has marked the one-year anniversary today of the invasion of Ukraine with a demonstration in the city centre.
The nation has come together today as Ukraine marks the anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
Southend mayor Kevin Robinson led the city in a moment of of silence and raised the Ukrainian flag at Porters Civic House from 10.45am.
The council will also be turning the Civic Centre, Porters Civic House, and seafront lights on City Beach yellow and blue.
Welcome 2 the UK, in partnership with the council, will be hosting a free coffee morning between 10am and 1pm at their hub in the Victoria shopping centre, for Ukrainians to meet and support each other on this difficult day.
The Southend charity joined residents in a demonstration in the high street, outside the shopping centre, this morning.
Ian Gilbert, councillor responsible for economic recovery, regeneration and housing, said: “I am so pleased to see the continued support for our Ukrainian friends both here with us in Southend and those fighting for their country overseas.
“It is very easy to forget how fortunate we are to live a peaceful life here in the UK, which is why this moment of silence, and the unity it creates is so crucial.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank hosts, residents, volunteers, charities and organisations who have provided guidance and advice to Ukrainian refugees. I know this has made a great impact and helped them settle into our City, and will continue for as long as it’s needed.”
