A BOMB disposal team has been called to a beach in Westcliff after reports of a suspected ordnance.

HM Coastguard Southend say the team were requested to attend a possible ordnance located approximately 500 metres from the beach at Westcliff.

On Friday the team couldn’t locate the items due to the rapid incoming tide, so had to return Saturday morning before low tide.

On Saturday a team made their way to the possible location thanks to the information that was given by the first informant.

Once confirmed the Army EOD made their way to Southend. The team then put a 100m cordon in to prevent anyone coming into danger.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard Southend said: “Once the Army EOD team arrived, they began their investigation of the suspected pieces of ordnance to determine their origin before making them safe for transport to be disposed.

“We would like to express our thanks to the public for their understanding and to the Park Run again for their cooperation and assistance.

“Many different types of unexploded military ordnance can and does wash up on the shore/offshore – it comes in different shapes and sizes and isn’t always easy to spot.

“Because of such ordnance, if found, it can be potentially dangerous, if you ever see something suspicious or out of the ordinary on the beach or in the sea, do not touch it, move it, or take it home, Let the experts decide if it is safe.

“Move to a safe space and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard so our teams can investigate.”
