WORLD Book Day is a popular school event where kids dress up as their favourite book characters.

The special day was created by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading.

It has seen thousands of youngsters enjoy the event of literary of fun over the years.

Here, we dip into the Echo archives to see what pupils were wearing on the big day ten years ago.

There are some of the usual suspects including Where's Wally costumes, princesses and of course, Harry Potters.

Roald Dahl book characters were a popular choice a decade ago, including Matilda and characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Back in 2009 children from Northlands Junior School, Pitsea had lots of fun dressing as their favourite characters.

Woodham Ley Primary School, in Rushbottom Lane, Benfleet when the children dressing up as their favourite fictional characters.

They are a reminder of what people used to wear and maybe a bit of inspration for World Book Day tomorrow.
