Barclays has announced another one of its south Essex branches will be closing its doors this year.

The branch in Canvey's High Street will be shut down this summer, however the bank insists it will still have a site for customers on the island.

Barclays bosses are currently looking for a site on Canvey and have told the Echo they can update once the "location is confirmed" and contracts "have been signed".

A spokesman said: “Our customers’ behaviour has changed significantly in recent years, with the majority now choosing online banking.

"This is reflected at Canvey branch, and as we adapt, we are finding new ways to support our customers by maintaining our community presence with options for customers who still require in-person support.

“On Canvey we plan to open a Barclays Local – a pop-up cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel.

"We are currently working with the community to identify a suitable location and will announce details once confirmed.”

The bank opened a similar hub in Billericay after its high street branch shut its doors last year.

The Canvey branch will be closing on Friday July 7.

Barclays has insisted it does not intend to make anyone redundant as a "direct result" of this closure.

All customers will receive a letter informing them of the closure, and the bank will be offering virtual "tea and teach" sessions for those wishing to explore digital banking and other alternatives.
