Plans have been submitted to Basildon council for repairs works to the west wing wall, to fix the first floor plate into external timber framed wall and to install new timber beam supports for the first floor.

The external chimney breast and roof also required remedial works.

Punch Pubs and Co operations manager Graham Roberts said: "The proposed development at Great Chalvedon Hall will improve the existing facilities and amenities of the pub for staff, customers and the local community.

"We look forward to continuing to constructively engage with Basildon Council as our plans and conversations evolve."

Landlady Laura Russ, who has worked there for more than 12 years, told the Echo the pub would “endeavour to stay open” during the works.

The plans will go in front of the council’s planning committee in due course.
