IT has been almost six months since Wetherspoon submitted plans for a new site in Basildon, after closing their previous pub.

Basildon Council received plans in November 2022 to build the three-storey pub on the site of the former Poundworld in East Walk.

The proposed Wetherspoon would boost a roof terrace which would overlook the new East Square cinema development.

This development came after the previous Wetherspoon site in Basildon, the Moon on the Square, closed back in September.

It has now been almost six months on since plans were submitted for this £3 million site, and there is still yet to be a decision.

According to Basildon Council, this is due to “technical reports and assessments” for the planning application still being sorted.

However, bosses at Wetherspoon said they still “absolutely” remain committed as they wait for a decision.

The application is to change the use from retail, the former Poundworld site, to public house/restaurant.

Plans include alterations to front and side, new proprietary external cladding system, and provision of external roof terrace areas.

In the application, bosses say: “The ground floor level will accommodate an open bar, dining and drinking areas, serviced by a kitchen with open gantry together with ancillary back of house facilities.

“The first-floor level is accessed either by the proposed feature staircase or via the passenger lift and comprises an open bar, dining and drinking areas, complemented by external roof terrace areas.

“The second-floor level comprises staff facilities and meeting rooms.”

At the time of submitting the plans, Wetherspoons bosses said they had “enjoyed great success in the town in recent years”.
