A dog was bitten by a snake at a south Essex nature reserve, leaving the dog with a wound and swelling.

The pet was attacked by the adder at Benfleet Downs on Friday, and the dog needed medical attention.

It's sparked a warning from bosses at Medivet in Southend. A spokesman said: "This gorgeous Italian Spinone is Florence she unfortunately had a run in with an Adder and received a bite. This occurred yesterday evening over at Benfleet Downs near the car park.

"As you can see from the second photo, the bite occurred on Florence’s leg and caused swelling. You also see the puncture mark.
