A WESTCLIFF pub could have outside seating in the street added ahead of summer to help bring “cafe culture” to Hamlet Court Road.

Bosses at Westcliff Drinks Co have applied for a licence to place chairs and seating outside the business on the pavements.

The owners say it will add to the “regeneration” of the area if Southend Council agree the plans.

It comes after bosses of other businesses in the road, which has been called Southend’s second high street, feel they are rivalling Leigh with a range of new and independent firms.

Damian O’Boyle, owner of Westcliff Drinks Co, said: “We’ve found ourselves fully packed at certain times and as we reach the summer months we know our customers would like to sit in the Southend sun.

“It also brings us in line with other restaurants, cafes and bars along Hamlet Court Road. It gives us more capacity and provides customers with the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air.

“I think it’s another helpful step in the regeneration of the road. All of the events we have held to date, including quizzes, pop up food, live music, comedy, have all been thoroughly welcomed by the community.

“Being able to host people outside just brings an extra option for the bar and complements the other venues offering cafe culture along Hamlet Court Road.

“At the same time we are keen to ensure it works for all, so will have a 9pm curfew outside to avoid any potential disturbance to residents.”

Mr O’Boyle previously said the business was “warm and welcoming” and it offers a range of drinks and a classic jukebox full of 50s, 60s and 70s vinyl.

The Westcliff Drinks Co is the sister bar of the Leigh Drinks Co, a small shop-bar in Leigh Hill.

Two pubs and a new bar have all opened in Hamlet Court Road since October, and the owners have insisted trade has been roaring since.

Alongside Westcliff Drinks Co, The Craftsman and Isla’s Bar have opened.
