A LANDMARK pub is changing its name in honour of King Charles and Queen Camilla as patriotic publicans pull out the stops to celebrate the coronation.

The Bread and Cheese pub, in Benfleet, is planning to make the most of the bank holiday weekend and will be renaming itself the Charles and Camilla for the day.

The country will be a sea of red, white and blue for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on May 6. And the pub, on Bread and Cheese Hill, will have a big screen in place for punters to watch along.

Owner Steve Haslam said: “Well why not change our name for the big day?

“I hope people find it good fun and bit funny, and for those who don’t perhaps they could do with a bit of a sense of humour.

“I think it helps us all get into the spirit of the day and event, and it is important we do so too. I think it’s all part of getting behind the event and we will be 100 per cent be supporting it.

“We’ve got our cut-outs of the King’s Guard including ‘Steve’, and you can pose for pictures with him, we have lots of bunting throughout the pub too.”

The businessman is encouraging customers to visit the venue for the day and weekend to enjoy a drink, good food and the patriotic merriment.

He hopes by stealing the names of the new monarchs, customers will also get into the vibe and celebrate in style.

He added: “Our big screen is now a permanent part of our business and garden and will be showing the ceremony on the day.

“I think it’s probably the biggest screen in the area, and there will also be various festivities, especially for the children.

“We are hoping for a fine, sunny day and to fill the garden with happy customers. There will be a singer, arts and crafts and face painting.

“We are already taking bookings and it’s going to be a really nice atmosphere in the pub and our garden.

“All are very welcome so come down to The Charles and Camilla for a good time and help raise a glass to the new King.”
