Don still lives with his wife of more than 50 years, Sandra.

The children at both schools treated him to a cake and sung Happy Birthday. He also presented a book for the school’s libraries about his experiences in the Second World War.

Don said: “I feel relieved to turn 103. My secret is wine and whisky as well as a great family and staying positive.

“I have many memories of wonderful trips to Normandy with many veterans, as well as lots of parties with family and friends.

“It was a truly heart-warming moment seeing all the children sing Happy Birthday. I will definitely treasure seeing the smiles and future of our young generation.”

His daughter, Joanna O’Brien, added: “He has had an amazing morning touched by all the love, respect, cakes, flowers, and cards he has received.

“As a family we are so proud of everything dad has done in his life.”

Don was called up for service in the Second World War at the age of 20 and took part in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.

He went on to enjoy a hugely successful career in the armed forces and was chairman of the Normandy Veterans’ Association in Southend for more than 20 years.

Don had a tough start to 2023 after breaking his pelvis in three places by falling in his kitchen while preparing lunch. He spent four weeks in hospital and rehab, and even caught Covid while in there.

Despite this, Don still has his aims for the future, which includes seeing the 80th anniversary of D-Day next year.

Ann Robinson, headteacher at Buttsbury Junior School, said: “The children and staff were very excited to see Don and help him celebrate his 103rd birthday.

“They sang happy birthday with great enthusiasm and their cheers were enough to raise the roof.”

Glenn Moore, headteacher at Hadleigh Junior School, added: “It is always a true pleasure to have Don visit the school.

“Today, on his 103rd birthday is even more special.”
