A FURIOUS couple have slammed Asda after claiming they were sold “completely raw” chicken from the hot food counter.
The couple contacted the Echo after purchasing six “skin on bone chicken thighs with a piri piri glaze” from the rotisserie section at the supermarket in North Shoebury Road, Shoebury.
Just moments after taking a bite of the chicken, the woman claims she spotted the chicken was “pink and severely undercooked”, adding that “she almost immediately started to feel sick”.
Asda has confirmed it is investigating the sale of the chicken.
The woman’s partner, Ashley Davies, a 35-year-old from the Southchurch area, was left furious by the ordeal.
He said: “We have gone to get the shopping and brought the cooked chicken thighs for lunch.
“Once she started eating it, she has noticed it is completely raw.
“My partner also has some health issues which means she has a very low immune system anyway without adding raw chicken into the mix.
“We can’t quite believe it, I feel angry. This should not be happening.
“I called the store directly and was offered a refund, but that is just not acceptable. Raw chicken can kill you.
“It is really bad; I feel like it is not being acknowledged at how serious this could be.”
Hours later Ashley said his partner was feeling unwell, with a stomach ache.
A spokesman for Asda insisted there had been no similar complaints to the store about pre-cooked chicken, but added that the store is investigating.
They added: “We have robust measures in place to ensure products are cooked fully and comply with food safety regulations.
“We would like to reassure our customers that we have received no similar complaints at this store and we are in contact with Mr Davies, and have asked him to return the product, so that we can try to understand what has happened on this occasion.”
