WHOEVER invented cream tea was a genius.

A scone with jam and cream to offset the mid-afternoon slump, all washed down with a cup of tea, is a slice of heaven and something to be savoured.

However, a lot can go wrong. The tea might be tepid and the cake might have come out of a packet, all making it a less than uplifting experience.

The Echo headed to Southend High Street to find a place that serves a cracking cream tea.

The Remedy Tea Shop is a popular cafe with a four out of five rating on Tripadvisor.

Customers credit the place on its pretty, eclectic decor, friendly staff and, importantly, their delicious cakes and tea.

Inside the cafe it was full of people enjoying having a chat in the cosy atmosphere.

It is decorated nicely, with doilies on the tables overlayed with glass table protectors, framed artwork on the walls and an assortment of different style chairs.

They serve a variety of loose teas and you can also purchase the teas to take home.

A friendly waitress showed me to a table and took my order for a cream tea for two.

I ordered the scones to takeaway and when they arrived I was happy to see the scones were definitely homemade and were still warm to touch.

There was a separate container for the fresh cream, butter and jams.

They certainly look delicious, but how would they taste?

Chunky to cut, but light and fluffy on the inside, the scones were certainly substantial portions.

Whether you are a jam first then cream, or a cream first then jam, the thick layer of sweetness and creaminess sandwiched between two sides of scone was a delight.

There was no claggy texture, which is the danger zone with scones. There's nothing worse than when it turns into a cement like substance and sticks to the top of your mouth.

These scones had a golden outside and were soft and fluffy in the middle.

It was the best scone I have ever tasted, and I will definitely be back for another visit when the cream tea cravings come back.
