For animal centres like South Essex Wildlife Hospital one large financial outlay can have huge repercussions.

The hospital in Orsett is one of few wildlife hospitals in the UK which protects, saves and rehabilitates wildlife. The self-funded hospital costs £1,000 per day to run, and they are reliant on donations.

Recently the hospital in Orsett had to replace the processor for their x-ray machine, and the high-tech kit set them back £17,000.

This is around the sum of the annual expenditure they put aside to care for the many injured fox cubs that arrive there.

Founder Sue Schwar and resident vet Tom have set up a Go Fund Me page to try to recoup some of the money and put it to helping fox cubs.

"We get so many adorable fox cubs coming in each year. Many have been abandoned because the mother is injured, or they might have fallen down a drain or lost their territory,” explained Sue.

"Foxes can be a bit "marmite" some people love them, others not so much. But they are beautiful creatures, and we help a lot of them back into nature all over the country."
