AN ICONIC former bingo hall has finally been razed to the ground ahead of potential plans to build dozens of flats.

Pitsea Bingo Hall, in High Road, has been left down to just rubble as demolition works continue.

The building had previously been hit by two fires, and a flood since it closed back in 2009.

It was subsequently labelled as an “eyesore” in the area by many as the years went by.

And the demolition followed Basildon Council’s orders to the owners to take action as a matter of urgency due to the state of the building.

Developers previously hinted that it could be turned into flats, and they could possibly look at around 90 new homes.

Craig Rimmer, councillor responsible for regeneration, said: “It is great news for residents. It is something I have been pushing on to get done as the building was an eyesore and totally unsafe.

“We had two fires, and the building had effectively been neglected.

“I don’t believe we have had anything into pre-planning yet at all, so it is just to watch to see what comes. It is most likely to be commercial at street-level and residential on top  that is my suspicion.

“But it has to be fitting for the area.”

He added: “I know 90 flats was mentioned initially but that is impossible on that site. We will just have to see what is submitted and go from there.

“It is good to have new homes, but I know the preference for residents would always be to have the old bingo hall back.

“No one wants to be in this place, but we have to make the best out of a bad situation.”

Basildon residents had mixed views on the recent developments.

Ryan Gordon, 23, said: “It feels good that that building no longer exists.

“Since its closure in 2009, it had many problems including the fire a few years ago.

“However, it is still a shame to lose the site as it could have been refurbished or converted instead.”

Paul Amestoy added: “I think it really sad in Basildon that the few, old, historic buildings that we have, are being or have been knocked down.

“And then building flats. It was a part of our history, so it is sad to see.”
