A popular restaurant in Old Leigh was forced to shut at the weekend as a fire broke out in its storage area.

Fire crews from Leigh and Rayleigh were called to No1 Cockleshed in High Street at 1.36pm on Sunday (July 2) to a fire in the storage area.

Thankfully, Essex Fire and Rescue Service says the blaze was quickly extinguished before 2pm.

However, the restaurant was sadly forced to close that afternoon due to the incident.

A spokesman for the restaurant told customers on Facebook yesterday evening: "Thank you all for being so understanding, we hate to shut under such exceptional circumstances.

"Those who were with us today, thank you for your patience and understanding.

"Those we unfortunately had to cancel on, we will be in contact and hope to see you all soon. Lots of love, all at No1 Cockleshed."

The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service commented: "Firefighters from Leigh and Rayleigh Weir were called to a property on Leigh-on-Sea High Street at 1.36pm this afternoon.
