BINS which break into song every time someone uses them are being rolled out along Southend seafront in a bizarre blitz on litter.

Waste management firm Veolia has leased the disposal “big belly bins” to the city as part of a trial with the council’s newly-launched “Just Bin It” campaign.

The black bins now have bright purple and bold glowin-the-dark neon vinyl and feature a solar panelled roof and two ash trays on either side.

They will be at prime seafront locations all summer and are equipped with smart technology, allowing them to compact waste and provide live information on how full they are.

Funk, drum and bass music blasts out to celebrate every time someone uses them.

Adventure Island and Sealife Adventure boss Philip Miller shared a video on Twitter of him and managing director Marc Miller having a look one of the unique bins outside of the theme park.

In the clip, he said: “Look at this, a singing bin; very stateof-the-art.

“Ash trays on the side, a solar panel on the top what has the world come to?

“Well done, Southend Council!”

Stuart Atkinson, senior contract manager, Veolia UK said: “I’m delighted to be launching this new anti-litter initiative on Southend’s seafront.

“At Veolia, we understand tackling litter requires creative solutions and this innovative campaign not only aims to keep the seafront clean, but also encourages both residents and the many thousands of visitors that enjoy Southend, to take responsibility for their actions in a fun and memorable way.

“We’re looking forward to a cleaner and more sustainable seafront for present and future generations to enjoy.”

Meg Davidson, Tory councillor responsible for environment, said: “Southend Council and Veolia are determined to combat the blight of littering and protect the city’s beautiful seven miles of coastline and beach.

“By working together and engaging the community, we aim to create a cleaner and more pleasant environment for everyone to enjoy, and we hope that these new bins and the wider campaign will be impactful and deliver results.”
