A police investigation has been launched after a cat was shot with an air rifle in Benfleet.

The cat was shot in broad daylight with the air rifle in Stanley Road, between 6am and 10am on July 25.

Despite the best efforts of vets, she succumbed to her injuries.

Police are investigating the tragic incident and have now issued an appeal for information from residents.

A Essex Police spokesman said: "We are investigating an incident whereby a cat was shot with an air rifle on Tuesday 25th July between 6am and 10am in Stanley Road, Benfleet. Sadly despite the best efforts of the vet, the cat succumbed to her injuries.

Being in possession of an air weapon in public without lawful authority or reasonable excuse is an offence, contrary to Section 19 of the Firearms Act 1968.

Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is also an offence, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
