ENGLAND’S Lionesses could be cheered on by fans watching it on Southend’s big screen at The Forum, if the city’s Labour councillors have their way.

Councillor Matt Dent is pushing the council to make it happen after the Lionesses’ roared to victory in the semi-final on Wednesday.

However, council leader Tony Cox fears there may not be time to make the necessary arrangements.

In the past, the big screen at The Forum has been used to show films and video art exhibitions.

Mr Dent said: “This England team have inspired the country.

“The fact it’s at 11am might be a problem with pubs opening in the city for people wanting to have a tipple, but nevertheless it’s a perfect opportunity for people in the area and beyond to come together and get behind the history-makers.

“The women have been tremendous role models for young people. To be able to come together and enjoy the moment is something I believe everyone will enjoy.

“Whichever way the match goes, they have done the nation incredibly proud.”

Mr Cox insisted he has made enquires with senior councillor officers about showing the match, adding that it will definitely be considered for major sporting events in the future.

He said: “It’s a good idea.

“I have made enquiries with the chief executive and the director of licensing to look into it.”

He added: “It might be tricky due to the short notice with licensing arrangements, such as securing the broadcasting rights to show the match.

“However, if it doesn’t work out, with other big sporting events happening in the not-too-distant future, such as the Rugby World Cup and the Tour of Britain, it could be something to look at in the future.”

After a 3-1 win, the England team have already made history by claiming a place in a football World Cup final since 1966.

They will play Spain on Sunday, with kick-off at 11am.

Full coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup final begins on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 10am ahead of the 11am kick-off.

It will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds.
