A MAN has been “struck to the head” and left with serious injuries after an assault in Southend.

Essex Police was called to reports of an argument in Southchurch Road, near to Corals and Greggs, at around 5:20pm yesterday.

One of the men was struck to the head and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A 32-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent. He remains in custody.

Officers are now investigating whether this incident is linked to another assault, also in Southchurch Road, at around 3:15pm.

Essex Police add that despite “speculation on social media” neither incident was a stabbing, and nor was a knife reported to have been seen.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “A man has been arrested in connection with an assault in Southend city centre yesterday.

“It was reported two men had been involved in an argument in the Southchurch Road near to Corals and Greggs at around 5.20pm.

“One of the men was struck to the head and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent and is currently in custody.

“Detectives from Southend CID are investigating whether this incident is linked to another assault in Southchurch Road at around 3.15pm which involved a fight between two men.

“We do not believe this incident poses a risk to the wider public.
