A POLICE car has been left wrecked after ending up on its roof following a serious crash in Colchester city centre.

Essex Police said officers were responding to an emergency call and were involved in a crash shortly after 2.40pm this afternoon, August 28.

The collision happened close to the Victoria Inn pub, at about 2.40pm.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “The two officers involved have not suffered serious injuries and no other injuries have been reported.

“We apologise for any disruption caused and appreciate your understanding while this incident is cleared.”

One witness, who did not want to be named, told the Gazette: “Blue lights were everywhere on the road - ambulance, police and firefighters.

“A police car was on its roof with jacks holding it up to get the officer out.

“I saw a uniformed copper being taken into an ambulance and he was wearing a neckbrace.

“It looked like they collided with another car that was not involved in a police incident and a woman was also on a stretcher.

“A big crowd had gathered around the crash and it caused massive disruption.

“I just hope everyone is OK.”

A bar worker at the Victoria Inn added: “I heard sirens going and then a massive crunch and then there was a cloud of debris coming across the window and I saw the car upside down.

“As soon as I saw what was going on I called 999 because I thought ‘this looks very, very bad’.

“Thankfully, everyone involved is safe. But if the crash had happened an hour earlier there would have been people waiting outside the pub to get in.

“The fact it’s not term time and there are no kids coming back from school, or the fact there is nobody outside having a smoke, is very lucky.”

A road closure was in place while emergency services, including Essex Fire and Rescue Service and East of England Ambulance Service, dealt with the incident.

On arrival, firefighters reported one person was trapped inside and worked for about 25 minutes to release them.

Bus services were also been affected after the incident.

A spokesman for First Essex said: “Services to and from North Station are being diverted via Station Way and Westway. Apologies.”
