Work to safely move a badger sett at Leigh Cliffs has taken a huge step forward after fears a road could collapse.
The vegetation has been cut at the site and ecologists will be arriving next week to lay mesh and install gates as they prepare to encourage the badgers to safely move on.
This comes after Southend Council was granted the necessary permit by Natural England this month.
It is a big step forward ahead of the reconstruction of Cliff Parade, after checks on the roads and pavements found “ongoing deterioration” caused by the badger sett underneath the surface earlier this year.
Lib Dem councillor for the Leigh ward, Peter Wexham, raised fears at the time that the "road could collapse".
Until the animals have moved on, the council cannot carry out the urgent repairs.
Deputy council leader Meg Davidson, councillor responsible for environment, said: “The road has had a lane closure for some time due to the undermining caused by the badgers, which is understandably frustrating for residents and road users.
“Logistically it’s one of the most challenging places the badgers could have settled due to the steepness of the slope and proximity to the pavement and road. But as soon as we have safely moved the badgers on, we can begin reconstruction on Cliff Parade.
“Public safety is our number one priority and until we can stabilise the road and pavement ensuring it is safe, the closure will have to remain in place. We apologise for any inconvenience and updates will be provided on the council’s social media accounts.”
