A “DANGEROUS” leak in a supermarket car park has not been fixed for months, despite causing a road into the multi-storey to “completely flood”.
Linda Waskett, 75, has repeatedly reported the large leak in the Eastgate Shopping Centre car park, which is creating a huge puddle of water and causing issues for shoppers.
Asda has promised to resolve the issue, but Linda claims the leak has been creating a “large body of water” for more than a month.
Linda, of High Road, Benfleet, said: “I always park near the back of the car park and I came back out and cross the little road into the main car park.
“I went straight ahead and there was this ford of water which was really coming down and hitting my head before I noticed what was going on.
“I saw two security officers and informed them of the huge water leak in the underground car park which meant the road was completely flooded.
“They were really quite dismissive and said there was nothing they could do about it.”
Linda visited the shopping centre again on Tuesday and although there was less water, the ceiling was still dripping.
She could not find staff to talk to about the issue so Linda continued shopping before reaching out to the Echo to raise awareness.
Linda added: “It wasn’t like before but it was still dripping and the same area was full of water across the roadway under the first view of cars which is ridiculous.
“It’s especially concerning given recent news of Raac concrete making school buildings vulnerable.
“What if that concrete was used for this structure? An ingress of water over time could make it a very dangerous situation.”
Linda also expressed her disappointment at the lack of support received from staff.
She said: “The security guards had radios so they must have been able to contact their boss who could reach people running the shopping centre.”
An ASDA spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the leaks in the car park attached to our store in Basildon Eastgate shopping centre. We have located the cause of the issue and will be carrying out repairs as soon as possible.”
