A NEW monthly live music event is set to launch at a popular venue in Southend aiming to bring classic and new indie bands together with DJs.

Indie Cult Club will start hosting nights at Chinnerys and hopes to bring legendary sounds from the 90s to present day hits.

John Pearman, of Leigh, is one of the founders of the club, and has attended hundreds of gigs.

He spoke about how the gigs he attended were lacking and how that would change with Indie Cult Club.

John said: “I go to around 30 or 40 gigs a year and really enjoy going to them but what frustrates me is when you arrive and are standing around with not a lot happening.

“The support band are often not related to the main band and at the end of the night - after the best part of the show - you usually just have to go home.

“We wanted to create a club night where everything is happening, when you walk in the DJ is playing the same music you booked to see and with the support band playing the same.

“At the end of the night you don’t have to leave, you can stay and dance for another hour if you’d like.”

John has been going to Chinnerys for more than 25 years and has seen bands like The Arctic Monkeys, The Charlatans and The Libertines perform.

The popular venue was chosen because of its 400-person capacity and it being the “best and biggest venue” as described by John.

He added: “We’ve not just started a club night once a month, we want something with some longevity and to create an atmosphere people feel drawn to and happy to attend.

“We chose Indie Cult Club as a name because we wanted people to feel part of something.”

John is encouraging people of all ages to join the club as indie music spans the generations.

He said: “Teenagers love indie music and if you were born in the 1960s you were probably enjoying it in the 1990s.

“We want everyone from 15 to 65 to have fun, it’s not fancy or posh it’s a place for everyone.”

Indie Cult Club will launch on October 6 with Toploader and will be followed by Republica in November and All the Young and Bez in December.
