The fire service has confirmed it remains in a Leigh street four hours after it was first called to reports of a man trapped in mud.

At least eight emergency vehicles are responding to the incident in Thorndon Park Drive this afternoon.

Firefighters from across south Essex including Rayleigh Weir, Rochford, Brentwood, and the fire service's Urban Search and Rescue team are working to rescue a man trapped in mud.

Belfairs ward councillor Stephen Aylen says the road is "blocked solid" with emergency services vehicles, including ambulances and police cars.

An Essex Fire and Rescue service spokesman commented: "We were called to Thorndon Park Drive, Leigh today at 11.36am to a reports that a man was trapped in mud.

"Crews from Rayleigh Weir, Rochford, Brentwood and our Urban Search and Rescue team are in attendance and are working to free him."

East of England Ambulance Service has also been contacted for comment.
