A VETS in Southend has noticed an increase in lungworm cases in dogs as it provides advice to owners.
Medivet Southend, in Eastwoodbury Lane, has highlighted the dangers of lungworms after noticing an increase in cases in dogs.
Lungworm is a type of parasitic worm that can infect dogs.
Medivet Southend say adult lungworm travels around the dog's body and can damage their lungs and other major organs, sometimes resulting in fatal consequences if left untreated.
They add: “Fortunately, there are preventative worming medications that can be given to dogs, such as Milprazon, to stop this infection occurring.”
Medivet have given a list of some of the symptoms of lungworm:
- Excessive bleeding
- Unexplained or excessive bruising
- Coughing
- Difficulty breathing
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
- Weight loss
- Tiredness and depression
- Pale gums
- Seizures
They add, if you think your dog has contracted lungworm, contact your local vet immediately.
