DISGRUNTLED residents have vowed to oppose proposals to replace a BP service station in Eastwood with 29 new flats.

This week, residents received letters from a firm called “Your Shout” carrying out a consultation on behalf of a developer preparing to submit a planning application for the BP garage at 529 Rayleigh Road.

The owners are looking to redevelop the site to provide 29 new “much-needed homes” in the area.

A number of residents were quick to express their views on the plans with many raising concerns around whether the infrastructure in the area could cope.

Decia Bushnell, 56, said: “The impact on the area would be a nightmare, especially regarding parking.

“Most people have two cars these days. I have lived here for 38 years, and parking is already dire.

“It will also put pressure on the doctors and schools. It certainly would impact traffic too, especially at school times and when something happens on the A127.”

Two consultation events are being planned in the area.

The proposal would see the existing petrol filling station, along with underground fuel tanks, demolished to provide a part three-and part four-storey building.

It would include a basement car park, retail units fronting Rayleigh Road, and new apartments.

In total, the letter states there would be 29 flats, alongside 29 parking spaces.

Ryan Brown, 31, added: “Removing the fuelling station would cause havoc on the roads as it would cause more traffic to build up.

“As for the building itself, the mention of some sort of business on the lower level, what more could the area need.

“Not to mention we would need more spaces for people to park should there be additional shops put in.

“In terms of housing, 29 flats and 29 parking spaces, we all know there will be more than 29 vehicles. These streets are already too busy for this. The whole project will ruin this area.”

Two online consultations are set to be held on Monday, November 27, at 7pm, and Tuesday, November 28, at 1pm.

The letter adds: “The project team has undertaken a significant design process for the proposed new building. We are proud to share the proposals. We will be holding two online consultation events. At each session, you will hear from the team behind the project.”
