A SOUTHEND choir has demonstrated the show must go on, performing carols in aid of a homelessness charity following the death of its musical director.
The concert, held at St Andrew’s Church, Westcliff, on Saturday, was originally planned to be conducted by Southend Bach Choir’s musical director, Colin Edwards. However, Colin tragically died following a crash near Southend Hospital in October.
The choir’s pianist, Roger Humphries, stepped in to conduct the concert. Despite their loss, Southend Bach Choir’s members gave a well-received performance in aid of homeless charity Harp.
Colin’s friend and fellow choir member Gillian Purnell described the concert as “therapeutic”.
She said: “We just got on with it because we had to. It was a happy occasion. I find music lifts you.
“After the funeral on Thursday, we just wanted to put on a good performance. We were very pleased with how it was received, people said they enjoyed it.”
Anna Firth, MP for Southend West, attended the concert.
She said: “It was a real privilege to attend the concert on Saturday. Harp is very close to my heart, and the community spirit behind them was so powerful to see.”
The choir raised vital funds for Harp, which helps more than 1,000 people facing homelessness in Southend each year. It provides support through housing, education, support and health treatment.
Harp also gives ongoing trauma-informed support, along with “life skills” classes in cooking, overcoming health conditions, or addiction. It helps people get back into work, education or training.
