A Ford Fiesta crashed half a mile down the road from the road crime police officers as it was "speeding so fast officers were unable to stop it".
Officers from Essex Police's road crime team were conducting late night speed checks in Benfleet on Saturday when they spotted the car travelling so quickly they claim they were unable to step into the road to stop it.
The teenage driver later crashed half a mile down the road, police say.
