An empty retail park unit is set to be brought back into use after an Argos store closed and left the site after more than 25 years.

The beloved catalogue retailer shut its doors last year at the Pipps Hill retail park as bosses revealed plans to relocate to the Sainsbury’s supermarket in East Mayne, Basildon, which was expected to only offer a click and collect counter.

This came just a year after Argos closed in the town centre, joining the line of businesses to leave Basildon in recent years, including Debenhams and Marks and Spencer. It had been part of the Westgate Shopping Centre for more than 20 years.

Now, the Pipps Hill store will open its doors once again as a Cancer Research "superstore", it has been revealed.

"Basildon superstore opening soon" posters have gone up at the site, as well as a large sign for the charity shop where the Argos logo once was.

Explaining what its superstores have to offer, a statement on the Cancer Research website says: "Enjoy bargain-hunting and uncovering treasure in charity shops? You'll love our superstores!

"You'll find a huge selection of clothing, accessories, books, DVDs and CDs, homewares, furniture and small electricals all under one roof.

"Most items are £5 or less (apart from furniture, electricals and new goods) and each superstore is up to 4 times bigger than our high street shops.

"All of our superstores have their own community space, ask in store how you can use these. Free parking is available at the majority of our stores.

"Grab a bargain and support our groundbreaking work at a superstore on a retail park near you."
