A CAR was engulfed in flames at the side of a south Essex road last night, as firefighters rushed to put it out.

The Vauxhall Zafira was completely alight next to Nevendon Road, heading towards Basildon, at around 6pm on Monday.

Fire crews rushed to the scene and put the fire out within half an hour.

A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire at 6.07pm on Monday night.

"On arrival, crews confirmed one car was 100 per cent alight. They used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the fire by 6.33pm."
