Fire extinguishers were used to break into a flat during an aggravated burglary in Hamlet Court Road last night. 

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following the incident in Westcliff yesterday.

Officers were called to Hamlet Court Road near Ceylon Road at around 7.20pm following reports of a burglary at a flat.

The suspect used fire extinguishers to gain entry. Nothing was taken during the burglary.

Investigating officers are urging witnesses to come forward, particularly two dog walkers who they believe may have seen the incident.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in custody.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Investigating officers are continuing enquiries and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything in the area yesterday evening to contact us.

"Detectives are especially interested in speaking with two dog walkers, who they believe may have witnessed the incident.

"If you can help, please contact us quoting incident 945 of 8 January."
