BAKERY fans say they have been left disappointed after a branch on Southend High Street closed without any warning.

Wenzel’s bakery, at 119 High Street, closed on Sunday, less than two years after opening.

Bosses at Wenzel’s confirmed the news in a tweet on social media stating: “Our Southend High Street store closed on Sunday”.

Google is also stating the store as “permanently closed”.

Residents have been quick to react to the announcement and have expressed their sadness.

Southend resident, Kerrie Trayling, 51, said: “Wenzel’s in the High Street was so convenient for shoppers.

“The cakes and baguettes are of good quality.

“Both myself and my extended family have loved using this bakers. It is very sad that it has closed without any warning.”

Tessa Thowney, another Southend resident, added: “It is such a shame.

“It is just a shame more people didn’t use Wenzel’s, as now we have lost it. There are no lovely bakers in the area now.”

Wenzel’s now has more than 100 locations across England, including in Basildon and Billericay.

The chain sell a number of different hot and cold foods such as wraps, salads, soups and cakes.

However, they are also very popular for their classics like fresh loaves, baguettes buns and pastries.

The closure of the Southend High Street store comes less than two years after the chain opened the site back in May 2022.

Wenzel’s next nearest store is in Prince Avenue, in Westcliff.

Echo Facebook users have also been reacting to the announcement.

Stuart Bell wrote: “Excellent sandwiches, and very friendly staff too. What a shame.”

Helen Reeve said: “Best bakers in Southend.”

Julie Duckworth wrote: “I live right by Wenzel’s, and it closed so suddenly. They did the most amazing sourdough. Proper gutted they have gone.”

Gemma Smith added: “I can’t believe it. I loved it there. Excellent rolls too. It was always busy when I was in there.”

The reason for the sudden closure is yet to be confirmed, but Wenzel’s has been contacted for comment by the Echo.
