ROWDY passengers involved in “persistent anti-social behaviour” will be banned from entering a c2c station for “at least six months”, British Transport Police bosses have threatened.

New signs have been installed at Basildon Station - which has had a long-running issue with anti-social behaviour - from the British Transport Police revealing anyone causing trouble could be hit with a ban.

Anyone causing trouble is set to be hit with a “withdrawal of implied permission” notice which bans them from setting foot in the station for at least six months.

This comes after figures in December 2023 revealed at least one crime is committed every ten days at Basildon train station.

Data considered by Basildon Council covered the period between April 1, 2023, and November 21, 2023, and showed a total of 82 crimes were committed in Basildon, Laindon and Pitsea train stations.

Signs have also been spotted at other c2c stations across south Essex, according to residents.

Kerry Smith, Independent Basildon councillor for Nethermayne, said: “It is a welcome step. We have just now got to see how it progresses.

“It sounds good, but I hope it works in practice as we don’t want to see anti-social behaviour.

“But these people break the rules anyway, so they may continue to break them. I am not saying it is a bad thing, it is worth while trying, but it is had to enforce as there isn’t enough police officers.”

Commuters also say that the sign has been placed in other c2c stations too.

The signage states: “c2c and British Transport Police are working together to reduce anti-social behaviour at railway stations managed by c2c.

“This station is private property. As a member of the public, you have an implied permission to enter the station.

“If you engage in persistent anti-social behaviour, you may be issued with a Withdrawal of Implied Permission (WIP) notice.

“This withdraws permission for you to be at the station. It will last for at least six months.

“Examples of anti-social behaviour include theft, shoplifting, violence, aggressive behaviour, persistent begging, a high-level of intoxication, resisting assist and graffiti.

“You are not allowed to enter or remain on any part of the station if you have an active a Withdrawal of Implied Permission notice.

“If you breach the notice, you may be prosecuted and / or the six-month period may be extended.”
