TWO drivers have been taken to Southend Hospital following a "head-on" crash in Rayleigh this morning, the ambulance service has confirmed.

London Road was partially shut for at least two hours after a car and a van were involved in a crash, causing delays and traffic chaos for commuters throughout Rayleigh and parts of south Essex. Emergency services remained at the scene until the road was cleared at around 9am.

Eyewitnesses said the van was "very badly damaged".

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "We were called just before 5.40am to a road traffic collision involving a van and a car on the London Road in Rayleigh.

"Two ambulances were sent to the scene and transported the drivers of both vehicles to Southend University Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

Police confirmed no arrests have been made.
