A MINI-village of 250 homes could be built on green belt land in Billericay.

Developer Gleeson Land has handed out leaflets to residents and is holding a consultation ahead of submitting plans to Basildon Council to build homes off Laindon Road.

According to the leaflets, the plans include building 250 “high-quality” homes alongside open space.

The developers says it is aiming to submit an official planning application “later this year”.

Billericay councillor, Phil Turner, has spoken out against the plans.

He said: “I mean it is green belt so that for me is non-starter.

“The local plan we had in place, although old, says it is green belt.

“We are getting a lot of speculative developments at the moment, some we win, some we lose.

“But I am sure members will be against this development. 250 homes and 31 per cent of affordable homes isn’t going to break the back on housing.”

The consultation states the homes will comprise of a mix of one, two, three, and four-bedroom properties.

On the leaflet and consultation website, Gleeson Land states: “An initial draft illustrative masterplan has been prepared to provide an indication of how the site could suitably provide up to 250 new homes, public open spaces incorporating new children’s play areas, additional landscape planting and a new area for natural habitat.

“The proposal would assist in addressing the current genuine housing need in Basildon district, with the proposals aim to deliver a range of high-quality new homes for a range of people.”

The consultation has been launched so the developer can “understand the views of the local community so that they can be considered and, where appropriate, incorporated into the proposals”.
