Huge plumes of smoke have been spotted billowing out of a flat above a Wickford restaurant.
Firefighters have been called to reports of a fire in a flat above the Sultana restaurant, in London Road, Wickford.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported the flat and roof space was full of smoke.
Video captured by residents shows huge plumes of smoke coming from the flat, with residents on social media describing a smell like "burning rubber".
Steve Briggs, who was at the scene, said: "I was waiting for a store in the high street to open, and could smell something like burning rubber.
"There was a little smoke over the buildings of the high street, then within a matter of a minute or so, it escalated to what you see in the video with a very strong smell."
