It’s always nice to see vintage pics from yesteryear, especially when it comes to sport.

So, here are some great shots from an open day held at Roots Hall in July of 1967.

An Echo snapper was invited down to the Southend United home ground to capture the players in action.

You can see from our gallery there was plenty going on.

Star players from the era, including Joe Ashworth, Sammy McMillan and Phil Chisnall, can be seen playing around on the pitch.

Another Shrimper - Jackie Ferguson, who was a new signing for the 1967 season, can be seen in several photos as can club legend Frank Walton, who today has a stand named after him at the ground, and was a former chairman of the club.

Another Blues legend, Ernie Shepherd, a former club manager, can also be seen in the photos.

The year 1967 was a good one for sport. England’s 1966 World Cup winning manager Alf Ramsey received a knighthood and Captain Bobby Moore received an OBE, while Queens Park Rangers became the first football league third division side to win the League Cup at Wembley Stadium, defeating West Bromwich Albion 3-2.
